A few minutes' walk from our door brings you to the North Gate, and a few more steps take you onto Sideng Street — the bluestone path polished smooth by centuries of horse hooves and footsteps. Wander slowly between the ancient stage, Xingjiao Temple, and Yujin Bridge. Every Friday, Yi and Bai villagers from the surrounding mountains come with their baskets to gather at the South Gate, where you can experience an authentic Tea Horse Road country market, untouched by the air of "artificial creative bazaars." Besides wandering the ancient market, you can relax by Yujin Bridge, explore the scent of books at the Pioneer Shaxi Bai Ethnic Bookstore, or hike to the top of Hualong Village for a panoramic view of the Shaxi Basin. When you return in the evening, the red lanterns along the stone steps will guide you to local grilled skewers (baba shao) and family-run restaurants, waiting to satisfy your appetite.
