Thank you very much for your detailed review of Beacon House. We are delighted that you enjoyed the Franco–Devonian flair of the rooms, the little touches such as fresh milk in the fridge, and of course Hervé’s breakfasts, ably served by Nathalie. It is always rewarding to know our efforts to make Beacon House a little different from the ordinary are appreciated. And yes — we do agree that the view from the rooms is truly special, even if we are a little biased. As you discovered, that view does come with a touch of geography. Brixham, with all its historic charm, is full of narrow streets, steep hills and the occasional flight of steps. Sadly, despite our best efforts, we’ve not yet succeeded in reconfiguring the 19th-century street plan or moving the harbour a little closer! To enjoy the fishing fleet, marina, and sea stretching beyond, one must be high enough to look down upon it all — that is the trade-off. We are clear in our description that access is not as straightforward as staying by the quayside, but as the saying goes: you cannot have both the view and the convenience in one package. Inside the house itself, we do appreciate that the 13 steps leading from the dining room to the bedrooms may pose a challenge for some guests. As Beacon House was built in 1830, installing a lift is unfortunately not feasible without compromising the historic fabric of the building. We recognise this means our home may not be suitable for everyone, and we try to be as transparent as possible so that guests can make the right choice for their needs. On parking, while we are fortunate to have our own spaces, the town’s public car parks are also available (albeit for a fee determined by the council). For those who prefer not to retrace the climb after a good dinner, taxis are plentiful, cost around ￡4, and run late into the evening — often a simpler choice than braving the steps. As for Wi-Fi, our average download speed is 67 Mbps and upload 17 Mbps. For a house built in 1830 with walls thick enough to withstand a small siege, we consider this quite respectable, and in six years of welcoming guests we’ve not received complaints until now. Nevertheless, we will keep an eye on it — though short of dismantling the walls, we may have to be content with what is already a robust service. We are sorry if these quirks made your stay less comfortable than you had hoped, and we fully understand that Beacon House may not be the ideal match for every traveller. That said, it is only fair to point out that there is indeed a perfectly good road up to us — no mountaineering equipment required, though it is still uphill. With warm regards, Hervé & Nathalie
