I have just returned from a short break with friends in one of the Police House Cottages which are part of the Dunstanburgh Hotel in Northumbria. Originally I tried to book rooms in the hotel but it was fully booked and I was offered the remaining cottage with two double bedrooms. This turned out to be a very fortunate choice. Our booking was for bed and breakfast but we had two evening meals in the hotel. The menu offered variety, the portions were satisfying and the food was well presented. One night we catered for ourselves as the cottage has everything you need. The cottage was very clean, spacious and pleasantly furnished with comfortable beds. The en-suite bathrooms were not large but were well fitted out. (Meant to tell the owners the bathroom floor squeaked but I forgot!) Apart from this the cottage was a quiet and peaceful refuge. This cottage would be great for a self catering holiday as there was a small entrance hall with a separate downstairs cloakroom and storage space over a washer and dryer with ample hooks for outdoor coats. The staff in the hotel were friendly and helpful. Broadband was available free in the hotel which I found useful. The owners are obviously making needed improvements to the main hotel decor and we will be recommending the cottage and the surrounding area to our friends. We visited the excellent Alnwick Gardens where we had lunch in the Treehouse ( Beef sandwich and bacon baguette were splendid). We didn't plan a shopping spree but fun shoes were bought in the colourful Moshulu shop in Alnwick and more purchases were made up the coast in Bamburgh where Country clothes have some very attractive and original leisure wear. The beaches, birdlife and country walks made this a very pleasant and peaceful few days.

Decided to treat ourselves to an overnight stay as my partner was golfing at Dunstanburgh golf course. We arrived early and were given our keys straight away and given a guided tour of the facilities by a very helpful receptionist (who later turned out to be a good all rounder, from serving beverages in the lounge to pulling pints in the bar and serving meals in the dining room). The 2 lounges were very pleasant and the dining room was lovely. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the food was excellent, something to please every palette. The service and the pleasantness of staff is to be commended and what was really nice was just about every guest said hello or have a nice day, was nice to be among such lovely people, the hustle and bustle and speed of everyday life was soon forgotten. Treated my parents and they've not stopped talking about how nice and relaxing it was, very close to the beach which is gorgeous and only 6 miles from Alnwick, Seahouses or Beadnell and not far from Craster, so very central if you plan on doing some local sight seeing. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend or indeed visit again.

Our first impression of the hotel, in the reception area, wasn't great. Not that there was anything wrong, it just wasn't very warm and welcoming. We even considered reducing the length of our stay. However, once we were comfortably installed in "The Stable", a darling one bedroom cottage across the street (and through a charming garden) from the main hotel, we were sold! The space is small, but so creatively remodeled - with a loft bedroom and a dressing room/full bath tucked underneath. It was sweet and quiet and very clean. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner at the hotel everyday (even though there are other options nearby); the chef is a wizard and the number of daily specials boggles the mind (while tempting the palate). Even if you're not vegetarian, do try the 3 bean chili. It's beyond delicious! The staff at the hotel and in the dining room were unfailingly helpful and became fast friends. We will definitely return here after the Edinburgh festival again next year. The location of the hotel is wonderful for exploring the sea coast, Dunstanburgh Castle, Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle (and village) - all worth seeing and just short drives away.

Fabulous stay in your Old Police Houses Cottage with room service with a warm welcome. Absolutely love your hotel and venue, set in the beautiful village of Embleton. Food was superb, with a bottle of Merlot or two from your lovely bar. Every time we come it just gets better and better, and we will come back soon.

My wife and I along with two friends had our Xmas lunch here . Everyone thoroughly enjoyed all 3 courses.Staff were friendly and very attentive. Not surprised as been many times over the years and never failed to have really good food,service and interaction with all the staff. See you again in 2026.

We were just looking for some takeaway food on a quiet Sunday afternoon and came across this lovely looking village pub. Ordered some take away fish n chips as we had the dogs in the car are were not disappointed fish was nice and fresh served with mushy peas, plenty of choice of condiments to choose from and cutlery and napkins available. Staff friendly would certainly visit again when in Northumberland.

I must admit to being a little unsure upon entry but WOW what a wonderful friendly family run hotel with excellent food and great location. The beach here is stunning! Strongly recommended. Thankyou for your warm friendly welcome and a most enjoyable stay.

When you read a previous bad review and others are very good you realise it isn’t to be believed! We have just eaten a delicious meal here. The venison cobbler was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Washed down with a couple of pints of White Rat beer it was a perfect way to enjoy lunch on a snowy day. Had a really lovely lunch of crab sandwiches and fat chips followed by amazing desserts - I had the cherry and pistachio tiramisu which came with coffee ice cream and hubby had Eton mess (not usually on the weekday menu but they made it specially for him). Friendly, helpful, polite, effecient staff with a great sense of humour and our visit was only marred by the antics of Terence L, who created quite a stir and who, it seemed to us, was clearly out for a free lunch (in our opinion his review is, in his words, "shocking" and not a true representation of events). We enjoyed The Dunstanburgh Castle Inn so much we went back today. Hubby had carrot and ginger soup followed by scampi and chips. I had the monkfish and shrimp ravioli. Possibly the best monkfish dish I've ever had. We said if we lived close by we'd be in here every week!
