Chose this for a night to stay as close to castleton and the most affordable accommodation we could find for a family of 3. Have stayed in youth hostel before so knew what to expect. However was this worth the ￡100 we paid. Well not really! Apart from its location being great to walk into castleton, we found the room was not up to basic standards. Hardly any hot water. Shower smelt fusty and damp so didn't use and it was just quite old and tatty. We wouldn't return for a family stay over but probably better value if sharing cost with friends.

You have to remember that this is a youth hostel. Of coming with a young family and staying in a four bed dorm with en-suite, cooking in the shared kitchen area and using the lounges then this is an ideal location and certainly value for money.

Clean and ample facilities, friendly staff, convenient & beautiful location. Our room was really spacious and close to kitchen, reception, bar and common room. 15 minute walk to Castleton centre and free parking. Just perfect. We’ve recommended to family already.

Have stayed here before and this was our second visit. Everything was great. The self catering facilities are fabulous with everything needed to cook and eat. Also bought a pizza one night and had some drinks. Loads of communal areas to relax and nice and warm when it’s cold out. The showers outside were nice and hot one day but cold the Sunday morning. There was a male member of staff that gave my friend a bit of a lecture about not taking the door code with her, she had left her phone inside with me and he kind of told her off like a child (a 50 year old woman). Asked how how she would get back inside without it. I mean, there’s windows, she would have just knocked on the window of the room I was in doh! We figured he was just tired and it didn’t spoil anything. Overall, the location is great, the facilities are great and the staff are almost all great too. Will use this place again when I’m the area.

We're pleased that you rated our self-catering facilities, as well as the food and drink options that the hostel sells. After 11pm, campsite guests are required to come and go via a side door (using a door code which is provided on check-in), as the main entrances are all locked up at 11pm. Our staff make this clear to campsite guests, when they check in; staff are not guaranteed to be around after 11pm. I imagine the staff member was concerned that your friend was outside without a way of getting back in (and that staff were not due to be on-site for much longer that evening). Just the ticket for what we wanted . A nights sleep .The room was basic but clean as expected. The bathrooms were ok but mouldy silicone .All good

We’ve stayed in one of the rooms before and had no problems and this is the reason we had no qualms about returning. This time we stayed in a land pod as this is all that was available at short notice. We payed ￡120 to stay in a tiny hut, the ground around the area was overgrown and full of mole hills, which you had to walk across to get to the outdoor loo that was like something from the 1900. There was a fire pit that was full of old burnt logs from the previous occupants and there was ash and burnt logs all around it, it was just awful. We’re used to camping in tents and staying in pods etc so using outside facilities is not a problem for us. They sell it as if 4 people can stay there and I think that is how they can charge what they do, however my husband and I was struggling if we both tried to move through it at the same time and we’re average sized people. They’re a joke. If I’d have paid half the price I’d have accepted it as quirky but I just feel proper ripped off. Castleton is lovely, I only live an hour away but wanted to visit the Devils **** for a gig and relax and have a drink which was amazing. But unfortunately the stay has put me off. I’ll drive in future.

As far as Youth Hostels go this is great! Staff are all really friendly and knowledgeable about the area, food is decent and the grounds are stunning! Perfect location for a loop hike up Mam Tor! Great facilities for all outdoor pursuits. Will definitely use again.

2nd visit to the hostel but first time taking the tent. The grass area is massive and my little one loved the fact there are lots of sheep and lambs roaming freely. Another fantastic stay. The staff here are friendly and helpful and we loved spending time in the grand lounge. We will be returning again. Would definitely recommend this place for camping.

Liked the surroundings and building Clean and practical, surroundings are lovely and building architecture. Appreciated the upgraded room. Shower needs to be warmer and more powerful. Checkout time could be better. Some of the bedding is a little worn as well but on the whole a pleasant stay.
